Ingredients

  • 6 apples- fuji, gala, or similar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup old fashioned oats
  • ¾ cup flour
  • 8 tablespoons butter

Method

  1. Spray the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Peel, core, and slice the apples, then toss them with the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Spread the seasoned apples evenly into the slow cooker.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, and flour. Cut in the butter until the mixture becomes crumbly, then sprinkle it evenly over the apples.
  4. Cover and cook on HIGH for about 2 hours, or until the apples are tender. Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • A mix of sweet and tart apples creates the best flavor.
  • Keep the butter cold for a crisp, crumbly topping.
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts make a delicious addition to the topping.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
