Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • ½ green bell pepper diced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ cup water
  • 6 hamburger buns

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and green pepper until browned and the vegetables are soft. Drain excess grease.
  2. Transfer the beef mixture to the crock pot.
  3. Add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and water. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours (or high for 2–3 hours), stirring occasionally if possible.
  5. Once thickened, give it a final stir and serve on hamburger buns.

Notes

  • Brown the beef with onions and peppers first for the best flavor and texture.
  • If the mixture is too thin, cook uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes to thicken.
  • Adjust the brown sugar to make it more or less sweet to your taste.
  • Swap ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days or freeze up to 3 months.
